Professor Diwakar Krishnamurthy leads research on software systems and assistive technologies that empower nonspeaking autistic individuals through innovative typing and communication systems.

Diwakar Krishnamurthy is a Full Professor and Schulich Research Chair in the Department of Electrical and Software Engineering at the University of Calgary. His research focuses on the performance and design of large-scale software systems, including distributed systems, cloud computing, and computer networks.

In recent years, his work has expanded into human-centered computing and assistive technologies. He leads the ETHEREAL Research Group, which develops extended reality (XR) technologies designed to support communication for nonspeaking autistic individuals.

A key part of this work explores typing-based communication systems. His research investigates how augmented reality, gaze tracking, and adaptive interfaces can help nonspeaking autistic individuals develop spelling and typing abilities for independent communication.

Projects such as HoloBoard and HoloType examine how immersive interfaces and virtual keyboards can provide structured support for spelling and text generation. These systems aim to reduce barriers to communication by combining visual guidance, interactive feedback, and adaptive learning environments.

Dr. Krishnamurthy’s work bridges high-performance computing systems and assistive technology design, contributing to the development of tools that make communication more accessible for neurodivergent individuals.
